Liquid plastic, also known as Plastisol, is the stuff that softbaits are made of.
It comes in a liquid form and is activated by heating it to a certain temperature in a microwave oven.
Indicative Liquid plastic hardness selection:
Extra soft: micro jigs - small Perch jigs / small vertical jigs
Soft: small - medium size Perch / zander baits, medium - large vertical jigs
Medium: medium - large zander baits / vertical jigs, and small - medium pike rubbers
Hard: medium - large pike rubbers
The softer the rubber compound, the more lively the lure is, and the harder the rubber compound, the more durable the lure is.
X D R is a more durable/stretchy version of Liquid plastic, meaning it lasts longer when for example fishing for northern pike, and smaller jigs stretch more and thus don't break down so easily either. You can pour pike rubbers, for example, with a medium liquid plastic, which gives you a more lively tail swimming action. Use in the same way as the standard Liquid Plastic, only the curing time is longer, complete curing after about a week. Of course, you can use the lures earlier, but full XDR durability is achieved in about a week.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Shake VERY well, it is
important that ALL white and clear material is mixed together,
otherwise, the hardness stated on the package will not be true in the
finished lure. Check the bottom of the container against the light to
see that no substance is left on the bottom after mixing.
2. Pour Plastisol into a microwave/heat resistant glass cup. You can make the base color of the lure and the back color of the lure in two separate cups and heat them at the same time.
3.
Add a few drops of liquid plastic color at a time and mix gently with a
mixing stick (DO NOT USE WOOD MIXERS!) to avoid unnecessary bubbles
until the desired color tone is achieved. NOTE! Always write down how
many drops of color you have put in, so that you can make lures exactly
the same color later.
If bubbles form in the mixture during the mixing step, you can let the mixture stand for a while before heating.
4.
Put the mixture in the microwave, adjust the power to 20-50% of the max
power. Put on a protective mask at this point, the vapor from Plastisol
is harmful/dangerous if inhaled. Slow heating with low power gives you a
clear rubber compound without bubbles. Start by heating, for example,
for about 1-2 minutes at a time and always check the rubber mixture
between the heatings by stirring with a mixing stick. Reduce the heating
time to about 30 seconds when the mixture starts to solidify (the
mixture solidifies slightly before clearing). Liquid Plastic is ready to
be poured (160-170c) when it vapors a little and by waving/mixing the
cup it can be found to be a flowable and clear mixture. If the mixture
is still sticky or cloudy, it must be carefully heated a bit more. NOTE!
overheating may cause the mixture to burn, turning yellowish-brown/even
black. For starters, you should use a digital thermometer with a long
metal stick-shaped sensor when heating Liquid plastic, and as you gain
experience you will learn when the stuff is ready to be poured.
5. Add the glitter and mix gently, you can also add the glitter before heating.
6. Treat the mold with Mold oil to give a nice glossy finish to the finished lure surface, and also the rubber compound will not stick to the mold.
7.
Now you can gently pour the mixture into the mold. NOTE! do not allow
the previous layer of poured plastisol to harden/cool completely before
the next layer is poured, otherwise, the layers will not "melt"
together properly and may come off.
8. Depending on the size of
the lure, allow to cool in the mold for 5-10 minutes before removing.
You can then put the lure in cold water and let it sit there for about
15 minutes. The lure may absorb some water if it stays in the water
longer and causes a slight clouding of the lure surface, but this effect
will disappear from the lure after a while.
It is advisable to collect the solidified rubber material left at the bottom of the cup, so you can use them later by reheating.
